Longquan Celadon Bird-Feeder Jars
This bird feeder is in the shape of a lotus bud on the verge of blooming. The exterior is decorated with a printed upturned lotus pattern and covered with greenish-blue glaze to form a “Chujin” (出筋). The thin glaze at the ends of the lotus leaves appears vermillion in color and even more beautiful and vivd. This piece has a contracted opening, a large belly with a handle and a flat base. The vessel is covered inside and outside with a plum green glaze, which is smooth and covered in a cracked ice pattern. The handle gap is also filled with glaze. This vessel is olive-shaped with a Ruyi-shaped opening at the top and a small hole at the side. Afer the Southern Song dynasty established its capital in Linan and became more stable and prosperous members of the imperial court, officials and wealthy households lived increasingly extravagant lives. Bird feeder jars are one example of this trend that came into being as a result of increased societal demand.
