Interlocution: The Technology and Art of Ceramics

Advancements in technology have made ceramics more than simply utensils in the kitchen. Variations of ceramics are integral to many aspects of our lives and brought us significant convenience. With technologies and civilization, however, come destruction of natural environments and depletion of resources, which has changed people’s values.Ceramics thus gains another dimension of meaning in its existence beyond the use as tools and vessels. This exhibition comprises three sections, “Emissary Across Time,” “Slices of Civilization,” and “Visions for the Future,” featuring ceramics as materials and components used in industrial equipment, consumer electronics, medical instruments, weaponry, and automobile parts. Also featured are many works of ceramic art from the Museum’s collection. Together, these industrial products and artworks facilitate an exploration into the relationships among technological advancement, art and culture, and natural environment.
