Following the spirit – endorse the paragon, lead the future, and enrich thecurrent – the 2nd New Taipei City Ceramics Awards, including AchievementAward and Innovation Awards, is established to promote local ceramics industry and to foster development of ceramic art in Taiwan. The Achievement Award aims to commend the great contributor to ceramics in Taiwan. And the Innovation Awards are composed of the Creative Category as well as Utilitarian Category, providing a platform for contemporary ceramics.

Born in Zhengning, Gansu Province

1947

Studied in Chinese painting at Hangzhou Vocational Art School (now China Academy of Art)

1948

First had the idea of "having to blaze a new trail" after hearing a lecture by Tien Han (1898-1968,Chinese playwright, novelist and co-writer of China's national anthem) and was influenced by his call for "new artistic creation in an new era"

1949

Came to Taiwan from Hangzhou because of the Chinese civil war

1950-1956

Taught in Xizhi High School, Tainan College of Agriculture (now the Affiliated Senior High School of the National University of Tainan), Kangshan High School and also worked as advertisement designer

1957

Concluded 6-year teaching career and began life-long connections with ceramics after becoming plant manager of Chinese Pottery Company at the invitation of Liao Wei-lin, one of Taiwan's first arts designers

1958-1960

Adopted the principle of paying artists by their creative abilities as plant manager of China Pottery Porcelain Arts Co. and invited painter Liao, Wei-lin, Xi, De-jin, Wu, Xue-jang, Jen, Guo-qiang and his classmates at Hangzhou Vocational Art School to participate in the making of modern decorative ceramics. This marked the beginning of the trend to combine painting and the making of ceramics.

1960-1964

Founded Dragon Ceramics Company with Jen, Guo-qiang and other partners

1962-1966

Worked as part-time lecturer at the National School of Arts(now Taiwan University of Arts)and taught ceramic design and the craft of ceramics

1966-1973

Director of Tang Yao Porcelain and Ceramics Company and Hantang Pottery Art Factory

1971

Co-organized the first Exhibition of Contemporary Art Ceramics under the name of Tang Yao Porcelain and Ceramics Company, a wildly successful event with 41 artists across three generations presenting their works including Jiang, Zhao-shen, Huang, Jun-bi, He, Huai-shuo and Liu Guo-song.

1972

“Black Stream Glaze Flat Belly Vase with Handle” with Handle selected for the Faenza International Exhibition of Contemporary Ceramic Art, Italy

1973

Received art award from St. John University, New York

1977

Moved to Sanzhi from Beitou

1979

“Wood Brown Vase with Poured-On Black Glazing” selected for the Faenza International Exhibition of Contemporary Ceramic Art, Italy

1980

Began career as an individual ceramist

1982

Work selected for the French International Ceramic Art Biennale

1984

“Multi-Colored Glazed Ceramic Plate(47×34cm)”selected for the French International Ceramic Art Biennale

1988

Presented two papers -- A General History of the Development of Ceramic Art and Thoughts on My Ceramic Career -- at a seminar on Chinese traditional ceramic art and contemporary ceramic art at the invitation of the Hong Kong Institute for the Promotion of Chinese Culture

1995

Led a large Taiwanese delegation to the 1995 Gaoling International Seminar on Ceramic Art in Jingdezhen, China and presented a paper on the topic of China's ceramic tradition and Taiwan's modern ceramic art.

2004-2006

Visited Jingdezhen numerous times, each time staying two to three weeks and making ceramic works using local kilns and mixing glazing material available in the capital of Chinese ceramics. The works were sent back to Taiwan after being displayed.
