Travelling the Diverse Routes of Cultural Tourism in Yingge Town
Do you know that no other place in the world combines industry and art as perfectly as Yingge?! Over here is a tiles factory, next door
a sanitary ware, and within a short walking distance, you can see artistic ceramics. The scene may seem disordered, yet, it is surprisingly
harmonious here. This is due to the simple and unspoiled folk culture of Yingge. If you pay attention on your tour around Yingge town,
you will find a lot of wonderful hidden surprises. That is why many people who ever lived here have cultivated a sense of belonging to this
place. They all agree, "The soils in Yingge keep people together!"
Yingge is Taiwan's celebrated ceramics center. During its peak years, a popular saying described the place: "Every house lights kiln fires,
and every family makes pottery". How are we to explore and take in this unique "hui-à" (meaning ceramic in Taiwanese) town? Starting
with a focus on industrial revitalization and cultural tourism, the exhibition explores the history of Yingge pottery, and introduces local
factory communities, old kilns and chimneys, and shops, all significant remnants of the process of industrial development. The show also
examines the transformed factories, culture centers of industries, crafts workshops, and representative kilns now working as successful
attractions for tourists. Together they conjure up the legendary charm and history of Yingge town. We have organized four cultural tourism
routes: The Start, The Heritage, The Expansion, and The Transformation. And invite you to walk with us from Yingge Ceramics Museum to
explore the town and experience the local cultural characteristics.
Route 1: The Start – Walk the path to the old days of pottery manufacture and early settlements
The birth and the development of Yingge pottery was an extraordinary undertaking. Let us look at artifacts in old and new relics,
historical photographs and learn the origin of Yingge ceramics.
Route 2: The Heritage – Reading the inheritance and development of potter families
The skills of the Yingge potter families were passed down from generation to generation. They kept abreast with the times,
adapting and developing their products. From their stories, we learn about the relationship between pottery and the culture of
Yingge's ethnic groups.
Route 3: The Expansion – Observing the dissemination and evolution of ceramic crafts
Through the great effort of many kiln factories and ceramic workers, the ideas and techniques of ceramic crafts were widely
circulated. The result was an increase in exciting works.
Route 4: The Transformation – Discovering the creativity and transformation of the ceramic industry
Moving with the flow of time, ceramic industries strove hard to develop fresh ideas and adjusting production techniques. They
recorded many stimulating stories about their creative concepts and how they transformed industries.
