  • Yingge: Remembering the Old and Exploring the New
The Wu family's hundred-year-old rice jar stands silently in the corner, its rustic appearance embodying the evolution of the ceramics industry in Yingge. A hundred years ago, the Wu family adopted the hand-throwing techniques in Cizao, Quanzhou to produce water vats, ceramic jars, teapots, cupboard leg coasters, and other everyday items. The products tell stories of the early settlers and gave rise to the prosperous hand-throwing pottery of today. In 1921, Chen Fei-ran founded Jianshan Ceramics Cooperative. Later, the dough jar of Yi Cheng Ji Pottery, the ovens of Li Er-mei, and the water vats of Ho Xin Pottery were the result of incorporating the "hand pinching" technique from Fuzhou, which laid the foundation for the production of vintage-style vases from the 1970s onward. During the 1940s, Shu Hai-shui and other potters incorporated the Japanese saggar and sculpting techniques from Beitou, which became the basis for the mass production of table ware and other ceramic products.
The vintage-style painting techniques pioneered by Hsu Tzu-jan in the 1970s and the kiln transformations from the 1990s onward show us the evolving ceramic industry of Yingge. Many people equate Yingge with ceramics and know that Yingge produces all five major types of ceramics. However, few really understand the place in history of Yingge's ceramics industry and the process of its development. We compiled a list of potteries and stores older than 30 years, along with relevant local records and photographs for visitors to experience Yingge's a hundred year of history. With maps and outdoor display boards to guide visitors, they can journey to the locations where the history of Yingge's ceramics took place and immerse themselves in the most original Yingge culture and lifestyle. In so doing, we hope to emphasize Yingge's spirit of place and help people find their cultural identity. As we know, there are countless stories to tell in Yingge, and there are more goals to be accomplished.
