  • Ceramics Sculpture
In the 1950s the “CeramicsSculpture” movement (led by Peter Voulkos) made clay a medium forartistic creation. With a wide range of different concepts, new techniquesand innovation, different methods were used to try to explore theunique beauty and style of clay. Ceramic creation was brought outof the realm of handicrafts and into the realm of fine art. The rejectionof visualization, the use of compound materials, geometric shapesand exploration of new ways of thinking were all applied to teapots. It is as though different designs and artistic motifs were appliedto the basic blueprint for teapot production. Through different combinationsof forms, glazes and materials, along with the projection of the artist’sown personality, emphasis was placed on symbolic significance ratherthan on functionality. Teapots became a creative theme within ceramicssculpture.
