Shimizu has been fascinated by red soil's unpredictability in the creative process since he built a kiln by the west side of Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture and studied the nature of local red clay. He incorporated what he learnt into his celadon creation and presented celadon works of art which have scale-like fine crackles emerged from the surface.
