  • Longquan Celadon Dragon Vase
This vase has a straight opening and the area from the neck to the upper half of the belly is divided into three circular curved sections, whereas the lower half of the belly is made up of deep tapering grooves. The upper part of the vessel is decorated with an embossed dragon twisting back and forth as it pursues a pearl. Its body is covered with a flame pattern and it has four feet each with three talons, demonstrating ferocious strength. The lower part of the belly is decorated with a carved lotus petal design, which is slightly ridged, creating a rich three dimensional feel. The vessel is covered in a luxuriant green glaze that is yellowish in parts and cracked. Both the rim and circular base which are unglazed and a vermillion color. The piece is a similar shape to the five-tube vases popular in the mid Southern Song dynasty. What is of particular note here are the rare signs of how the five-tube vase evolved into a dragon-tiger vase. The work is regular and originally had a lid, with a rooster or dog button-handle.
